Why the Industrial Metaverse Will Revolutionize XR

Why reshoring manufacturing, digital twins, simulation and Industrial AI could make the Industrial Metaverse one of the biggest drivers of XR adoption.

Kevin O’Donovan presenting on how the Industrial Metaverse is revolutionizing the XR industry at HarvardXR 2025

At the recent HarvardXR “The Augmented Self” event, I had the opportunity to share my thoughts on why I think the Industrial Metaverse is the best term to describe what we’re going to see happening across industry and energy over the next couple of years.

And why it is going to revolutionize how we use XR.

Manufacturing is the driver

For me, one of the biggest drivers of the Industrial Metaverse over the next few years will be all the onshoring, near-shoring and shortening of supply chains.

Everybody wants to bring manufacturing back. But the only way we’re bringing manufacturing back to any country is through digital twins, simulation, digital threads, automation, robotics and Industrial AI.

There are strategic imperatives to consider when building factories today, including economic viability, the availability of raw materials and workforce considerations.

Digital twins and simulation will be important for optimizing production lines and adapting them to customer needs. At the same time, advances in computing, AI and immersive experiences are becoming key enablers of the Industrial Metaverse.

Technologies are converging

The convergence of these technologies, together with the rise of platforms such as NVIDIA Omniverse, is enabling far more digital collaboration.

Especially with the rise of next-generation AI, including generative AI, agentic AI and physical AI, we’re starting to break down traditional data silos and change work processes across industries.

But XR cannot sit on its own. We need to integrate it into existing workflows if it is going to enhance productivity and efficiency.

There are still challenges around data sharing, organizational silos and the need for a digital thread that can unify the digital twins within a company.

And remember, we’re just getting started.

Would ye agree?

I’d be really curious to get yer feedback on these points.

Would ye agree or disagree? As always, any comments or questions are welcome.

The HarvardXR event is hosted annually by the Harvard Graduate School of Design XR Club. The 2025 event took place on Saturday, April 19, at Gund Hall at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Again, a big thank you to the entire HarvardXR team and all the volunteers who delivered a great HarvardXR 2025 event.

Kev.
