The Energy Metaverse Is Already Taking Shape

A few months before the word “Metaverse” made the mainstream news thanks to the Facebook rebranding, I proposed delivering a session on “The Energy Metaverse” to the Enlit team.

So, on 1 December in Milan, on the Inspire Stage during Enlit Europe, I got my opportunity.

My goal was to share what I see the Metaverse as being all about: the characteristics of a Metaverse, the tools and technologies needed, the emerging platforms and so on. Crucially, based on what we’ve been doing in the Energy industry for years, I wanted to explain why I’m convinced we’re already building the Energy Metaverse.

Thanks to the Enlit team, there’s a recording of my session from that day.

We’re already building the Energy Metaverse

In summary, I really am convinced that we’re building the Energy Metaverse already.

Many of the building blocks, technologies and platforms we’ll need for the Metaverse are not coming from the Energy industry. But what the industry is doing today with digital twins, especially what I’d call “dynamic” digital twins, is key.

These real-time digital twins, enabled by real-world IIoT and AI, provide the foundation we need to create a virtual world that really is a true digital representation of our existing Energy world.

Then add the business need to find more immersive and collaborative ways of working remotely, and a lot of things start to come together. It’s a bit of a perfect storm, and we really are doing a lot of this already.

I really am convinced of it.

But why a newsletter?

For folks who know me, I’ve been a fan of AR, VR, virtual worlds, digital twins and the like for years. As I tried to outline in my Inspire talk, I honestly see the Metaverse as the next iteration of the digitalisation of all sorts of industries, and of how we’ll actually work and collaborate in the future.

That said, I do not see us all suddenly working in some sort of Metaverse anytime soon. This is going to take years. But, as they say, the Metaverse genie is out of the bottle. It’s not going back in.

One of my personal goals for 2022 is to continue sharing the cool technologies, tools, processes and examples I come across, but in a more structured way. That’s my reason for creating this newsletter, with a new edition every two weeks.

At least, that is my plan.

Looking ahead to 2022

Speaking of plans, all going well, I’ll be off to CES 2022 after the holidays. Given the number of companies planning to showcase new Metaverse innovations and technologies there, I’m sure there will be many cool ideas applicable to Industrial and Energy use cases.

And with DistribuTECH and PowerGen in Dallas during the last week of December, it will also be interesting to see who’s off building bits of the Metaverse there.

So I have no doubt I’ll have enough cool stuff and content to share.

That’s my plan. I do not have all the answers, nor do I even know all the questions at this point in time, but it should be a fun ride to see how all this develops in 2022 and beyond.
